Homework on Functional decomposition:
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU READ THE STATEMNET OF THE PROBLEM AND THE INTRUCTIONS VERY
CAREFULLY AND STRICTLY FOLLOW THEM.
b. You are confined to construct the functional decomposition within the red rectangular area with the total
number of functions discussed in the slides of the lecture. So, there will be total of 11 functions (or boxes)
within the red rectangular zone. While you can put these functional boxes anywhere you like (within the
red rectangle), you absolutely cannot change the locations of the following boxes: “ User”, “Power Source”,
“Environment”, “1. ???”, and “5. Heat Water” (This is very important to follow). Note that each box must
look similar to the Box No. 5 shown here. Use the following diagram to complete the functional
decomposition of a coffee maker machine.
• In a narrative section explain what you have done.
• Explain in details how as a group you worked together to solve this part (a) of the problem
c. Instructions are also repeated on page 2
d. It is strongly recommended that you copy and paste the image from page 3 to either Powerpoint or Visio
and then do your work there. This is because of the powerful drawing tools readily available in these two
programs. Once completed, transfer the finished work to your report.
Important Notes:
• This is a Team Homework (similar to the other ones) which means that each of the team members
MUST independently go through the problems and think of the solutions. Then arrange a meeting in
which ALL team members ought to be present to discuss each member’s solutions and suggestions in
order to formulate a team’s “final solution”.
• There shall be only one PDF file from each team.
• Additional information that you researched (if you did and was needed) and put in the report MUST
come from sources outside your textbook and my slides.
• Also, sentences and paragraphs must be of your own, not copied from the references.
• References must be listed and cited as instructed before
• Note that you MUST assess and defend the “credibility” of the sources from which you extract
information.
• For each problem you MUST produce a table like what you see in the last page.
o Again, “write your name and sign”, no initials.
